2015 Quantum of the Seas Day 6
Friday April 17, 2015
At 9:00 AM, our ship docked in Philipsburg, St Maarten, an island that is divided between France and Holland. We visited this island in 2010 when we cruised on the Oasis of the Seas. On that trip, we rented a car and drove to Orient Beach on the French side but this time, we just stayed on the Dutch side.
As we got off the ship, there were long lines of people waiting to board excursion buses but we went straight to the water taxi stand. We each paid $7 for a round trip ticket between the pier and Philipsburg Beach, a long white sandy beach that runs parallel to the town's main street called Front Street where all the shops are located. Above the beach is also a row of restaurants that range from quaint to fancy. We rented chairs and umbrellas and sat back, relaxed, and swam in the warm and clear water of the Great Bay.

Around noon, Tri and I hailed a taxi to go to Maho Beach to watch airplanes land. Maho Beach is interesting! It sits near the end of Princess Juliana International Airport and because the runway is so short, all airplanes, especially the jumbo ones, fly extremely low above the beach to try to land near the beginning of the runway. There is no other places in the world that offers this kind of spectacle. Because the beach is so popular with plane spotters, the latest flight schedules are prominently displayed at several nearby restaurants.
We found Loc's and Chien's family here and watched all kinds of planes land for over an hour then everyone headed back to Philipsburg Beach.

A rain shower sent all of us to a beachside restaurant where we had a lunch of hamburger, chicken wings, salad, pizza, and cold beer. After the ladies had left to go shopping or back to the beach, the guys lingered at the restaurant and took shots of rum and coke. Several funny things happened this afternoon that continue to allow us to reflect and laugh. It was a very fun afternoon!
