Lago Vista, in Texas Hill Country is sparsely populated
August 23-26, 2012

The last vacation we took as a family was in May 2010 when we went on the wonderful Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas Cruise. But at that time, the two newest members of our family weren’t there. In fact, they weren’t even born. Cameron came to us in September 2010 and just a couple of months ago, it was Colby’s turn.

Taking a family vacation with an infant in tow is not an easy task and that was why we decided to go somewhere near, where we could relax, and do a little fishing and swimming.

Steve had been searching all over Texas for a lake house to rent on the Internet and found a website that has several lakeside rental properties. After considering several of them we decided on the one in Lago Vista, Texas.

View is great in the daytime but spectacular at sunset
The first floor contains a two-car garage, a large community bedroom with four bunk beds and a bathroom.

The second floor is the main house with three more bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large kitchen and breakfast area, and a huge and open dining and family room facing the lake.

Floor-to-ceiling windows run the entire floor yielding absolutely breathtaking views of the lake. We are in awe of the size of the family room and the fun features it provides.

A plush sectional sofa, big screen TV, pool table, ping pong table, and a foosball table occupy the family room to keep kids and adults alike entertained.

A large redwood deck wraps around the second floor of the house providing even more stunning views of the surrounding area. It is evident that the house and its deck were built to accommodate large groups of people. A large patio dining set sits in the middle of the deck flanked by a gas grill and bar on one end and a hammock on the other end.

After we unpack our luggage, we head down to the lake. Since the house is located high above the lake and on a long lot, we quickly realize that walking down from the house to the lake is hard enough but walking up from the lake to the house – especially carrying stuff – is very strenuous and we quickly learn to minimize the number of trips.

In the Texas heat in late August, we cool off by jumping into the fresh and cool water of the Colorado River. We do that every day. We also sit in the open boat house, fish, watch boats and skiers going by, enjoy the cool wind and the spectacular sunset.

Lago Vista is a very small community located on Colorado River, 35 miles northwest of Austin or about two-hour drive from Fort Worth, where we live. There is nothing here except for a few houses scattering along the river. But Round Rock, a larger town 30-minute drive away, is close enough if you want to buy groceries, eat at nice restaurants, or shop at the huge outlet mall called Premium Outlets.

The house we rent is right on the bend where the river is as wide as most lakes in Texas. From the road, you can hardly see the house because of all the trees but at the end of the long driveway, the two-story house looms magnificently.
When not by the water, we would be up in the house playing pool, table tennis, or foosball; or just relaxing on the deck.

We also brought plenty of foods and drinks with us and have more than enough to cook for a big family the whole time we are here. We cook and enjoy our dinner daily either in the kitchen or the outdoor grill.

What a great – although short – family vacation!
